According to a medieval legend, a tiny
helpless infant was once stolen from
its mother. The child fell into the hands of smugglers,
was sold to strangers in a distant land. The mother set off
in search. She looked for the child everywhere,
and a few times came close, but by then
the owners had already given it to others.
Wondrous legends were told of the child. Who
in the meantime became an adult. Then grew old. They said
there was peace wherever he went. People parted from him,
as from their own lives, to bequeath the good
to others. The mother waited for this meeting
her entire life. But she was afraid she couldn’t
bear it. And so postponed the encounter until her death.
